 Climate

Climate of the Comau Fjord

Huinay is under the influence of a temperate and humid climate. Various meteorological data is collected by a weather station next to administrative office, including pluviometry, temperature, solar radiation, air humidity, and wind speed. Here is an example of the various data available (summary enero 2006).

The annual behavior of rainfall is highly variable, with the possibility of 2 to 3 generally dry months in the summer (December through March) and rain the rest of the time. In the region of the fjords, increasing sharply close to the Andes Mountains, annual average rainfall surpasses 6,000 mm. As can be observed from the data of 2002 to 2004 (pluviometría Huinay) collected here at Huinay, annual rainfall is quite high. The total rainfall for each of these years is as follows (further data are available upon request):

2002 6,315.5 mm
2003 4,518.0 mm
2004 4,547.5 mm

The average yearly temperature is approximately 10.5° C (50.9° F). Daily temperatures can be highly variable depending on cloud cover, wind and time of day.

Solar radiation on clear days is very intense, making it necessary for all people on the station to remain aware of sun protection as it is quite easy to burn in a very short time.

Wind is a strong factor of the climate here at Huinay, especially on clear warm days when convective winds are produced by heating of the surrounding mountains. It is normal to have wind speeds around 5.4 km/h on such days. On windier days, gusts may occasionally exceed 65 km/hr (see summary enero 2006 under Viento max km/h Enero 2006).
