Bathymetry of the Comau Fjord
Although there is no detailed bathymetry of the entire Comau estuary available, many fragmented exploratory soundings carried out by vessels from the Chilean Naval Oceanographic Institute show the depths of nearly all the estuary. This information is available as navigational charts at www.shoa.cl.
Furthermore, the San Ignacio del Huinay Foundation carried out a detailed bathymetrical study of the Huinay cove where a local mud flat forms. These studies determined the highest and lowest tides, measured during the strongest moon phases that month, and soundings were made that determined isobath lines showing the submarine relief in the area.
As a result of these soundings, a growing embankment was detected in the northern sector of the cove. At the same time, the eastern edge of the embankment’s slope runs in a general north-south direction with a similar slope in all its extension, rapidly reaching extreme depths. Towards the south where the township of Huinay lies, the relief of the coast is smooth and accessible.
